Karine MATHIEU
Directrice artistique MEMENTO
Biography
Vit à : à Auch et Toulouse , FR
Art Critic and Exhibition Curator
After completing a thesis on kitsch in Lourdes as part of her Master’s degree in Fine Arts / Applied Arts, she continues her research on the intersection of visual arts (contemporary art and graphic design) and sociology, examining the interplay between social behaviors and current artistic practices. Building on her extensive experience as an exhibition manager with the Frac Occitanie-Toulouse and as an independent curator, she is frequently invited to serve as an expert on juries, for art school diplomas, the Individual Creation Assistance program by the DRAC Occitanie, and public commissions under the 1% for art initiative. Since 2016, she has also been the Artistic Director of MEMENTO – Espace départemental d’art contemporain, an artistic laboratory project housed in a former convent undergoing revitalization. She is particularly interested in the emerging art scene, fostering dialogue with artists about utilizing unconventional spaces for exhibitions and contemporary creation.
CURATORIAL APPROACH
Karine Mathieu explores new forms of exhibitions by studying relational practices in relation to contemporary creation. She proposes alternative models to traditional exhibition spaces by exploring non-traditional venues. Her curatorial projects are inspired by fields of beliefs and popular practices, with a focus on experimentation and dialogue with artists at the heart of the collective creation process. Spaces, artists, mediators, and audiences are central to her curatorial approach.
