Mathilda Portoghese is an independent art curator and co-chair of Contemporaines, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting women and gender minorities artists.
Her curatorial approach is deeply influenced by the interactions between the mainstream and feminisms, which she approaches as critical and emblematic phenomena of pop culture. Committed to the concept of artistic companionship, she works closely with artists and curators who also act as observers and narrators of this broad, digital and vulgar culture.
Passionate about TV shows, her research focuses on archetypal representations in popular fiction and their impact on reality. Keen on immersive and multi-sensory displays, her projects and the artworks that infuse them often challenge their own medium, while engagingly translating the social dynamics and identities they explore.
Her work has been shown in various venues, including Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles (Paris), DOC (Paris), Jeune Création / Fondation Fiminco (Romainville), Prix Dauphine pour l’art contemporain (Paris), Centre d’Art Contemporain Jean-Collet (Vitry-sur-Seine), 6b (Saint-Denis), La Tour Orion (Montreuil), Galerie du Crous (Paris), Houloc (Aubervilliers), Centre d’Art Contemporain Tignous (Montreuil), and Nuit Blanche 2022 as assistant to artistic director Kitty Hartl. She also supervises mentoring pairs for the Passerelles program, including Aude Aboul Nasr & Sabrina Belouar (2024), Mélody Lu & Apolonia Sokol (2023), Joséphine Topolanski & Eden Tinto Collins (2022).
Looking ahead to 2025, Mathilda Portoghese is pursuing her commitment with ambitious projects such as Kiddy Smile’s first solo show at Nouveau Printemps (Toulouse), Jérémie Danon’s solo show at Galerie Éric Mouchet (Paris) and Dark Room, an exhibition with Turbo collective, with whom she is currently in residency at Les Sheds (Pantin). These projects confirm her determination to combine artistic guidance with critical thinking on contemporary cultures.
