Julia Cistiakova (b.1979 in Lithuania, lives and works between Paris and Zürich), the graduate of the School of Curatorial Studies École du Magasin (2007, Grenoble, France), holding a Master of Visual Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts of Vilnius (2004, Lithuania), is currently Artistic Director of JPS Art Foundation Zug-Paris, as well as independent curator, and artist.
In 2021, she held the position of Director for Contemporary art development in the Department of the Nièvre in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region at the French Ministry of Culture. Prior to this, she has been Artistic Director of the IN SITU patrimoine et l’art contemporain (2020) project in the Occitan Region.
From 2017 to 2020 Julia took on the directorship of Contemporary Art Space in Privas (France), where she developed an outstanding international exhibition program, and brought the institution to a higher level. For her achievements in Privas, Julia has been decorated with the special mentioning from the French Ministry of Education.
In 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, Julia co-curated two yearlong exhibition projects at La Box, Bourges, and at Grand Cordel, Rennes, France, respectively. Between 2012-2014, in Lithuania, Julia curated several important international exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius, and in Klaipeda, as well as at Nida Art Colony, and Academy of Fine Arts in Vilnius. Her projects have changed the artistic landscape of the country. Earlier, as an independent curator, she curated numerous exhibitions in France, Switzerland, Canada, Belgium, Russia, and co-curated an exhibition for Performa’09 in New York. Julia has repeatedly collaborated with Hans Ulrich Obrist on the BEC (Brutally Early Club) project. She’s the author of a series of short films about curatorial work.
From 2018 to 2019 Julia has been a member of Administration Council of the LUX – Scène nationale Art visuels + Arts scéniques Art Center in Valence, France.
Julia Cistiakova is editor of multiple contributions and authored essays to catalogues on contemporary art. She is also co-author of the book Harald Szeemann. Individual methodology (2008).
Julia is also a member of IKT International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art.
