As a curator, author and critic, Valentine Umansky has worked for various institutions dedicated to visual arts. In 2015, after collaborating with the Rencontres d’Arles festival and Photoquai, she left France for the U.S., and published Duane Michals, Storyteller (Filigranes) that same year. Since, she has written for LEAP, Flint Magazine, Aperture and FOAM, directed the publications of Brian Griffin. SPUD (GOST); Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum (Radius Books) and Layers (Dilecta), co-curated the 2018 LagosPhoto Festival and translated Pierres by Roger Caillois (DittoDitto) as well as The Art of Feminism (Chronicle Books.) She is drafting her second book dedicated to the use of vocal practices in contemporary art, finalizing a large project dedicated to Nigerian modern and contemporary art with Iheanyi Onwuegbucha, and co-curating the 2020 FotoFocus biennial in the U.S., where she serves as Curator of Lens-Based Arts at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati.
